An Oxygen Respirator ( OBA ) is a rebreather. It is mainly used in firefighting. The oxygen is produced by a chemical contained in a green tube, which is inserted into the bottom of the respiratory device. Kanister uses potassium superoxide as a CO 2 scrubber and an O 2 generator. A sodium chlorate wax at the base produces additional oxygen when first used as the tube must reach a high internal temperature before it begins to produce its own oxygen. This is the circulation of air exhaled through a tube that starts a chemical process, usually takes less than 5 minutes, the normal burning time of the "candle" and the mask will initially be filled with light, harmless smoke. The extreme heat from chemical reactions requires the use of thick leather gloves to handle used tubes. The bag along the side of the chest unit cools the air mixture before inhalation and is a very effective system, with enough cold air when entering the face mask. There is a 60 minute timer at the top of the chest unit which, during the victim battle, is set for only 45 minutes. This will give the user a 15-minute window to evacuate to a secure atmosphere. Although it looks big and heavy, this device is lightweight and comfortable to wear and does not interfere with the user's freedom of movement.

In early 2001, the US Navy replaced the OBA for firefighters with SCBA. SCBA is more cost-effective than OBA, and it also does not produce hazardous waste, a problem with chemical oxygen generating systems.
