The Volvo 262C is the first luxury coupe made by Volvo. Based on Volvo 200 Series, 262C was built by Bertone in Turin for the 1977-1981 model.

Concepts and design

A team of American executives and engineers led by Henry Ford II had visited the Volvo factory in the mid-1970s and had brought Lincoln Continental Mark IV for driving. The car generated interest among Volvo's staff and people living in the area. Without facilities to save on low volume projects, Volvo arranges with Bertone to build the coupe.

Drivetrain, suspension, floor pan, and many body panels from 262C are taken directly from the Volvo 260 sedan, with Bertone building roofing pillars, roof pan, windshield, cowl, and the top of the door. The 262C roof is about 10 cm lower than the 260 sedan.

262C uses a PRV engine, V6 engine developed jointly by Peugeot, Renault, and Volvo. The machine uses the Lambda-sond oxygen sensor system; this is the first use of this system on the production machine V.

Standard equipment includes power windows and mirrors, central locking, full leather interior, cruise control, air conditioning, heated front seats, velg and electrically powered radio antennas. The only optional extras are the limited-slip differential, stereo options, and the no-cost option of the three-speed Borg-Warner automatic, not the four-speed manual with electrically operated overdrive. In 1981, the manual option was removed in the US.

Reception

Aimed primarily in the United States market, 262C is Volvo's first entry in the luxury car market. About half of the annual production is allocated to the United States. It competes with Cadillac Eldorado and Mercedes-Benz 280CE. 6622 cars were produced from 1978 to 1980.

Development

In 1979 the 262C was given a deep cover of luggage, wrapping the back lamp, and control of the thermostatic heater. The manual transmission car receives a shift from 242GT.

In 1980 the boring machine increased from 88.1 mm (3,468 in) to 91 mm (3.58 inches), resulting in an increase in displacement from 2,664 cc (162.6 cuÃ, in) to 2,849 cc (173.9 cuÃ, in). The engine is also reconfigured, with seven main pads instead of four and an increase in compression ratio from 8.2: 1 to 8.8: 1. Also in 1980, the front air dams from 242GT were added to 262C. For North America, the 2.8 liter engine produces 130 hp (97 kW).

In 1981, the final year of production, the vinyl roof was removed.
