The Nike Oregon Project is a group created by Nike's athletic shoes company in 2001 to promote American long haul. Runners live in the Portland, Oregon area, and train at the Nike headquarters campus located outside of Portland, a suburb of Portland, Oregon. Some runners in the group live in specially designed homes where filters are used to remove oxygen from the air to simulate life at high altitudes. Numerous studies have shown that living at altitude causes athletes to develop more red blood cells, improving athletic performance. In addition, special software is used to monitor the electrodes attached to the athlete, determine what conditions they are in and how far or fast they can train. They use underwater treadmills and low gravity. They also have a partnership with the Colorado Altitude Training (CAT) for their hypoxia training equipment.

Creation
The Nike's Oregon Project was created by Nike Vice President Thomas E. Clarke after being reportedly disgusted by the performance of a lackluster American athlete in long-distance events since the early 1980s when Oregon Project coach Alberto Salazar won the New York City Marathon three times in a row from the year 1980 -1982.
When the first project began, Salazar chose some of the top runners at the time whom he believed had great potential. Finally, however, he realized that because these athletes were older, their bad habits were entrenched and this caused Salazar to even take the young athlete. This led him to take Matthew Centrowitz, Galen Rupp and Adam and Kara Goucher. These athletes then became more successful because Salazar was able to work with them from a younger age.

Leadership
Health coach and project director Alberto Salazar has been questioned since he suffered a heart attack on the Nike campus in Beaverton on June 30, 2007. Since then, Salazar has been implanted with a defibrillator, and he has planned to take on more limited. role with Nike Oregon Project. In June 2008, Salazar chose a temporary replacement as head of the Oregon Project, employing cross country coach Jerry Schumacher from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In turn, Schumacher has brought the main protagonist, Matt Tegenkamp, ââwith him to join the program along with Chris Solinsky and UW-Madison Freshman to be a pro Evan Jager.

Criticism
In 2002, the Oregon Project came under scrutiny from the US Anti-Doping Agency, which formed a think tank to discuss home ethics at altitude. Senior Agency Managing Director Larry Bowers said, "The argument for altitude space is that they are redeeming athletes who can not live high." What they do not take into account is that people who live on high do not get the benefits of low training. "Alberto Salazar believes the Anti Agency -Doping will eventually approve the height of the house, saying that it is no different from other legal scientific advances such as heart rate monitors and sports drinks.
In 2006, the subject was reviewed in more depth by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) who claimed that it could be equivalent to blood doping and therefore they should be banned; However, on September 16, 2006, Dick Pound of WADA announced that "... the overwhelming consensus of our health, medicine and research committee - is that, at the moment, it is not right to do so." No explanation was given about how WADA would impose a ban.
The Oregon project has also been criticized by college coaches to recruit Rupp Galen directly from high school to go live in Oregon home and leave college at the University of Oregon for the first year.
On May 19, 2017, The New York Times wrote an article about a US Anti-Doping Agency report that claimed Salazar worked with athletes to raise their L-carnitine levels, possibly violating anti-doping rules.
