Curb feelers or curb finders are springs or wires mounted on vehicles that act as "whiskers" to alert drivers when they are at the exact distance from the sidewalk when parking.

The device is mounted low on the body, close to the wheel. As the vehicle approaches the sidewalk, prominent signs are scratching the sidewalk, making noise and alerting the driver on time to avoid wheel or hubcap damage. The feel is flexible and not easily broken.

Hotrods

Curb feelers are still used on some hot rods when the 1950 display is desired. They are very popular for cars with whitewall tires, which easily lose their white coating when scratched against the sidewalk. Sometimes the sidewalk antenna is found only on the passenger side of the car, as it is most common near the sidewalk when parking. Sometimes they are added just next to the front wheel. Some people who use sidewalks have one wire or spring, while others have two to increase the protected area. Each particular car may have only one pavement installed (as in the picture) or more if mounted near the front and rear, as well as on both sides of the vehicle.

Recreational vehicles

Recreational vehicles sometimes have rubber or metal, antenna rods such as mounted on the underside of the body acting as touchers so drivers are warned if they approach sidewalks or other obstacles, thereby reducing the chances of prying or even cutting sidewall tires and generally improving the safety of vehicle operations.

Today, the US Department of Labor and Health Safety Administration mentions that heavy equipment users can benefit from analog accessories:

In the 1950s, cars were often equipped with sidewalks... Using a 48-inch conveyor conveyor piece, 4 to 5 feet in length with a width of 4 to 6 inches and a few pieces of angled iron, you could create a feeler pinch point, angle of continuous miner. Electronic sensor

Curb feelers based on optical technology are designed to work the same way but work near obstruction rather than having physical contact with it. As described by one United States patent:

An electronic wing dampening system uses two pairs of optical sensor units to detect objects located near the front end of the vehicle during parking. A pair of optical sensor units detect objects directly in front of the left side of the front end of the vehicle while a pair of optical sensors detect objects directly in front of the right portion of the front end of the vehicle. By providing the vehicle operator with the object location as well as the exact distance the object from the front end of the vehicle the operator can avoid hitting the object when parking is very close to the object.

Such devices, and simple electronic devices similar to roadside wire antennas used on cars, are used in the design of various mobile robot devices. One of the robotics companies working for the US Department of Defense uses laser assisted pavement towing technology.
