Water ionizer

A water ionizer (also known as alkaline ionizer ) is a home appliance that claims to increase the pH of drinking water by using electrolysis to separate the flow of water into acid and alkaline components. The treated water is called alkaline water . Proponents claim that the consumption of alkaline flows generates a variety of health benefits, making it similar to alternative health practices of alkaline diets. Such claims violate basic principles of chemistry and physiology, and there is no medical evidence for any health benefits of ionized water.

Machines were initially popular in Japan and other far east countries before becoming available in the US and Europe.

Operasi

Although described as 'water-ionizing', the machine is designed to work as a water electrolyzer. This is an electrochemical process in which water is separated to form hydrogen and oxygen by electric current. The overall chemical reaction is shown below:

2 H ₂ O ( l ) -> 2 H ₂ ( g ) O ₂ ( g )

During this process, the water near the anode is acidic while the water near the cathode is alkaline.

2 H ₂ O 2e ^- -> H ₂ 2 OH ^- (at the cathode )

2 H ₂ O -> 4e ^- O ₂ 4 H (at anode)

The water ionizer works only by sucking water near the cathode. Water sucked from the side of the cathode contains elevated levels of hydroxide (OH ^- ) and is expected to have a higher pH (ie more basic), while water sucked near the anode will increase H ^{make it sour. Acid water is claimed to be useful for household disinfection.}

The effectiveness of the process can still be debated because electrolysis takes a lot of time and effort; therefore, the amount of hydroxide that can be produced in a fast moving water stream such as a flowing tap will be minimal. In addition, the process of reversing the reaction requires less energy, so if the area between alkaline water and acidic water is at least semi-permeable, water will experience another reaction leaving only neutral water. The second reaction is shown below:

H OH ^- -> H ₂ O

A similar machine has been used to produce electrolysis water that is chemically very different because it also contains sodium hypochlorite, the main ingredient in bleach, and therefore can be used as a disinfectant.

Health claim

Water ionization is often marketed based on health claims that usually focus on their alleged ability to make water more alkaline. Various benefits have been claimed, including the ability to slow aging, prevent disease, offer protection from nuclear fallout, give the body more energy, and offset the effects of acidic foods.

There is no empirical evidence to support this claim, or the claim that drinking ionized water will have a noticeable effect on the body. Drinking ionized water or alkaline water does not alter the body's pH due to acid-base homeostasis.
