The blind spot monitor is a vehicle-based sensor device that detects other vehicles located on the driver's side and back. Warnings can be visual, audible, vibrating, or tactile.

However, blind spot monitors are an option that can do more than monitor the sides and rear of the vehicle. They can also include "Traffic Traffic Alert", "which reminds the driver to back out of the parking lot as traffic approaches from the side."

Histori

If the side mirrors on the car are adjusted in a certain way, there is no blind spot on the side. This method was first expressed by George Platzer in a 1995 paper presented to the Society of Automotive Engineers, but this method is often overlooked in the driver's education class and takes time to get used to it. Removal of blind spot removal by trained drivers is cheap and eliminates the need for expensive technological solutions to the problem, provided drivers take the time to set and use their mirrors properly.

Platzer receives patents for its blind spot monitor, and has been incorporated into various products related to Ford Motor Company. The blind zone mirror has been touted as an "elegant and relatively inexpensive solution" for this known issue.

Volvo

BLIS is an acronym for Bl Spot ind I nformation S ystem , a system of protection developed by Volvo. The previous Volvo parent company, Ford Motor Company, has since adapted the system for the Ford, Lincoln and Mercury brands.

The system was first introduced in the redesigned Volvo S80 2007 sedan and generates a noticeable warning when a car enters the blind spot as the driver changes lanes, using two lenses mounted on the door to check the blind spot for future collisions.

Mazda

Mazda is the first Japanese automaker to offer a blind spot monitor, which they call "BSM" (Blind Spot Monitoring). Originally introduced in the 2008 Grand Touring Mazda CX-9 and remains limited only at the highest trim levels through the 2012 model year. For 2013, BSM is standard on both CX-9 Touring and Grand Touring models.

Mazda also added BSM to the 2009 Mazda 6 redesign. Blind spot monitoring is standard equipment on 6i and 6s Grand Touring trim levels, and is an option available on some lower trim levels. Mazda has expanded the availability of BSM, after adding it to the list of features Mazda3, CX-5, MX-5 Miata, and the upcoming CX-3, often as part of the option package.

Ford

Ford uses the BLIS acronym for its blind spot detection. Active systems both in "drive" and "neutral" transmission gear, and turned off when in reverse gear or park. In Ford products, the system was first introduced in the spring of 2009, at the 2010 Ford Fusion and Fusion Hybrid, the 2010 Mercury Milan and Milan Hybrid, and the 2010 Lincoln MKZ.

Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi offers Blind Spot Warning (BSW) on Pajero Sport which was launched in 2016.
