History
In 1976, company founder Gerald McGinnis opened the company's first manufacturing facility for an anesthesia mask near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Previous research and product manufacturing has taken place in the founding kitchen. Other starting products include endotracheal products and tracheostomy.
The company introduced the first continuous positive positive airway pressure (CPAP) engine for the treatment of sleep apnea in 1985. Three years later, in 1988, the company went public under the ticker symbol of RESP shares. In 1992, Respironics received a patent for two-tier technology. This technology was originally intended as an improvement on CPAP; however, its use has evolved into the treatment of other respiratory disorders such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Another important milestone was the acquisition of a ventilator company, LIFECARE International in 1996, a competitor of sleep apnea, Healthdyne Technologies in 1998 and a medical monitor and sensor leader, Novametrix in 2002.
