History
Bravo was originally launched as a premium commercial channel on December 1, 1980. Originally it was co-owned by Rainbow Media Cablevision and Warner-Amex Satellite Entertainment divisions; the channel is claimed as "the first television service dedicated to film and performing arts". The channel initially broadcasts its program two days a week and - like the former Bravo sister network, Nickelodeon, which shares its channel space with the Alpha Repertory Television Service - shares its channel space with adult-oriented paid channel Escapade, featuring soft-porn movies. In 1981, Bravo was available to 48,000 customers across the United States; this total increased four years later to about 350,000 customers. A 1987 Bravo profile in the New York Times observed that most of the shows consist of international, classical and independent films. Celebrities such as E. G. Marshall and Roberta Peters provide opening and closing comments for movies aired on the channel.
The show's art programs seen in Bravo include the Jazz Counterpoint show. During the mid-1980s, Bravo shifted from premium services to basic cable channels, though it remained service without advertising. Bravo signed a guarantee agreement with Texaco in 1992 and within a month broadcast the first Texaco Showcase production, an adaptation stage of Romeo and Juliet . In the mid-1990s, Bravo began to include PBS-style underwriting sponsorship, and then began accepting traditional commercial advertising in 1998.
In the Encyclopedia of Television , Megan Mullen considers certain Bravo programs as "considered too risky or eclectic for mainstream channels". The programs are Karaoke and Cold Lazarus , the last series by British playwright Dennis Potter, shown by Bravo in June 1997, and Michael Moore's documentary series The Awful Truth
In 1999, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer bought a 20% stake in the channel, which was then resold to Rainbow Media in 2001. NBC purchased the network in 2002 for $ 1.25 billion; has owned shares in her sister channel and network for several years up to that time. NBC's later company, General Electric, combined the network and other broadcast and cable properties with Vivendi Universal Entertainment in May 2004 to form NBC Universal.
In the early 2000s, Bravo changed its format from focusing on performing arts, dramas, and independent films to a focus on pop culture such as reality shows, fashion and makeover shows, and celebrities. Bravo's "makeover" took place in 2003 with the reality series of Queer Eye for Straight Guy , which collected 3.5 million viewers. Entertainment Weekly put "Bravo reality shows" on its "best-of" list, "From Queer Eye to Fab Guy Straight Five to Fashion Runway fashion fashions for the stained Real Housewives franchise, Bravo's unique realization , mixing high culture and low objections to create a delicious and addictive television. "
In recent years, Bravo has put the spotlight on cultural diversity, regional and relationships with several reality series, such as: Million Dollar List , Shahs of Sunset , Married to Medicine , New Year's First , Southern Charm and "Real Housewife". Bravo Media released the first ever written series, Boyfriend's Guide to Divorce , in the second half of 2014, which achieved impressive ratings, causing the go-ahead for the second season.
A study released in May 2008 put Bravo as the most recognizable brand among gay consumers. The age demographics of Bravo are 18-54 people, according to the cable television profile of the Cable Television Bureau.
On February 7, 2017, coinciding with the premiere of the new original series Fraudster , Bravo updated its imagery with a refresher to a greeting-inspired logo, with the present letters all given in small letters (replacing the keyword text based on the logo used by channels between 1994 and 2005), and neutralized imagery to attract more male audiences. The "... by Bravo" marketing tag will also be removed from general use.

Programming
Bravo program schedules mainly include original produced programming, especially reality content, most popular The Real Housewives and In Actors Studio and Chef Top > , Flipping Out , and Married to Medicine franchise. The channel also broadcast series reruns of NBC's parent network and sometimes other NBC-owned networks, non-networking series, including those from NBCUniversal Television Distribution, and widescreen films, mainly from the Universal Pictures catalog. Bravo utilizes block programming for both new and existing events such as the "Fashion By Bravo" block.
After being acquired by NBC, Bravo began complementing NBC Sports coverage at the Olympics, broadcasting live broadcasts overnight and morning during the 2004 Summer Olympics; the coverage was followed by the 2006 Winter Olympics. The channel had no coverage during the 2008 game, as NBCUniversal has acquired Oxygen, allowing Bravo to continue to schedule its regular programming during NBC's Olympic coverage. In 2012, the network serves as an almost exclusive home for the Olympic tennis tournament at Wimbledon, with coverage of up to 56 hours except for the men's and women's singles final, which airs on NBC. During the 2016 Rio Olympics, Bravo serves as the exclusive home of the entire tennis tournament.
High definition
Bravo began airing in 1080i high definition format in 2007. This format is available on all major cable and satellite providers.
Before Bravo broadcast in HD, the Olympic Channel is currently launched as Bravo HD in 2003. It has a completely different schedule from the main Bravo schedule, acting as a "demo channel" with only programs created in HD format. It was redirected to a more general format like Universal HD in 2004 after the NBC/Universal merger.
International version
The Australian channel named Arena rebranding the on-air presentation in 2008 to conform to Bravo as a result of an agreement with Bravo Media. Arena uses the pre-existing Bravo slogan, "Watch What Happens" and has access to Bravo-produced programming.
The Canadian version of Bravo was launched in 1995 by CHUM Limited. The channel initially broadcasts many of the same genres of programs broadcast by American partners, although it has deviated to bring a more dramatic program than the focus of American network reality because of its adherence to the original delivery of the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) that require channels for air programming related to art. Once the current owner of Bell Media re-launches the channel in 2012, complete with the adoption of the new logo, currently there is basically no relationship between two channels apart from the shared name. The channel still carries several series related to art that are aired by American Bravo (such as Inside Actors Studio and Work of Art ). Most of the American Bravo reality programs have been chosen by competing special channels, such as Corus Entertainment's Slice and HGTV Canada.
In the United Kingdom, a television channel called Bravo was launched in 1985 separately from the US service. The UK channel, owned by BSkyB, closes on January 1, 2011, focuses on male programming.
MediaWorks New Zealand announced that it will close the Fourth-oriented free air channel in July 2016 and replace it with Bravo as part of an agreement with NBC Universal.
The Brazilian version of Bravo was launched in 1996 by a partnership between TVA - then television branch Grupo Abril -, TV Cultura and Native American network. This channel produces original programming like a brazilian version of Inside Actor's Studio called Studio Brazil. In August 1999, Bravo was renamed Film & Arts after Bravo Networks took full control of the channel administration. In 2000, Bravo Networks sold Movies & amp; Arts to Prayer Chellomedia. AMC Networks acquired Chellomedia in 2014 placing Film & amp; Art in AMC International Networks portfolio. By 2016 the channel is no longer available in Brazil after being issued by several cable and satellite providers.
