Smile Operation is a non-profit medical services organization established in William P. Magee, Jr. and his wife Kathy Magee. It is headquartered in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
In addition to providing surgical cleft lip and palate for children around the world, Operation Smile works as a non-governmental organization to reduce the occurrence of cleft lip and palate around the world; developing ambassadors to raise awareness of gap issues; sponsoring a world care program for international cases requiring special care; organize chapters and foundations around the world to assist countries in achieving self-sufficiency by gap operations; host a US care network to help families in the US with cleft issues; developing and managing education programs around the world related to cleft issues; and organize student leadership programs.
As of March 2013, according to its own bookkeeping, Operation Smile has provided more than 3.5 million comprehensive patient evaluations and over 200,000 free surgeries for children and young adults born with facial deformities.

Initial History of Smile Operation
In 1982 Dr. Magee, a plastic surgeon, and Kathy Magee, who was then a social worker and nurse, were invited to join a cleft repair mission in the Philippines with a group of medical volunteers. When they realized that this group would not return to the Philippines even though there were hundreds of children who needed surgery, they founded Operation Smile. Magee said,
It was a mistake... We saw hundreds of children and saw many more turn away. We know that this group is not planning to return. So we are planning another trip, but when we see how many people suffer from their facial abnormalities, we have to keep coming back. You can not be untouched by things that we think are completely normal and suddenly become monumental events in a child's life.
The scope of the organization increased after Mother Teresa invited Operation Smile to come to India to care for the handicapped children.

Founder

Program
Operation Smile organizes an international volunteer mission to provide improved cleft lip and cleft palate in developing countries, coordinate programs to train physicians from around the world, manage programs to assist host countries in achieving cleft lip cleft and self-sufficiency gap improvement, supportive education and research programs to eradicate cleft lip and taste, and set up a global volunteer program for high school and college students.
Surgical mission
For each mission, Operation Smile verifies credentials and arranges travel participation and arrangements for volunteer teams. The team usually includes mission site coordinator, plastic surgeon, anesthesiologist, pediatrician, intensive care physician, head or nurse coordinator, pre and post operative nurse, child development specialist, speech pathologist, dentist and/or orthodontist.
The team works with local volunteers from host countries as well as from other countries. Many volunteers provide important logistical (non-medical) support for missions; they can serve as translators, medical record technicians, photographers, or assist in areas such as food service, lodging, procurement, or transportation. The teams also typically include two high school students who fulfill various functions, including giving presentations on health and dental hygiene for families living near the mission site. Operation Smile coordinates donations, purchases and delivery of medical provisions (equipment, medicines, supplies) for each mission.
In 2005, the volunteer medical team provided free operation for 8,339 children through international and local medical missions within the country. During fiscal 2009, Operation Smile provides free surgery for nearly 13,000 children and young adults suffering from cleft lip and/or cleft palate.

- Iraq: In 2007 Iraq's health minister of the Kurdistan region, Dr. Zorban Othman, announced that Operation Smile would treat 51 Kurdish children in adjacent Jordan. The doctor said, "The move was taken because of poor security conditions in other areas of Iraq, which made it impossible for foreign doctors to come".
Ambassadors
World Caring Program
On a case-by-case basis, Operation Smile will bring exceptional craniofacial cases to Norfolk, Virginia when mission conditions are not appropriate for the severity of the case. As of June 2007, approximately 200 world treatment patients have been treated. This program can be extended to other locations.
Chapters and foundations
Operation Smile has chapters of global resources that raise funds and awareness to support its programs. The mission team is hosted by an international foundation responsible for all logistics missions within the country and raising funds and awareness throughout the year.
To help countries become self-sufficient in caring for cleft patients, beginning in early 2007 the organization planned to open a comprehensive medical care clinic in Colombia, Honduras, Morocco, China, India, the Philippines and Vietnam. The centers provide operations and care, educate local volunteers, conduct local development activities and manage local communication/administrative services. The center in Vietnam is expected to treat 2,000 patients annually and to train about 1,000 professional medical personnel.
US. care network
Operation Smile provides a network of resources to help families in the US with children born with facial deformities. The network is accessed through the Operation Smile website and includes a list of referral websites and a list of physician resources with available physician names to review a case.
Education
Operation Smile provides a framework for its partner countries to jointly share knowledge, technology and skills through the use of programs tailored to each country's specific medical infrastructure. The university partnership offers medical volunteer training Operation Smile in advanced techniques and provides opportunities including scholarships, emeritus professorships and visiting professorship programs. Educational exchange programs are also offered through partnerships with leading medical teaching institutions.
The annual Operation Smile Doctor Training Program (PTP) takes surgeons from around the world to the United States for special surgical skills training. This program has helped train more than 650 international doctors in advanced craniofacial techniques.
Operation Smile has twice hosted a global summit on medical standards in Norfolk, Virginia.
Student program
More than 600 Operation Smile student associations in the United States and around the world build awareness, raise funds and educate students about the values ​​of commitment, leadership, and volunteerism.
Operation Smile sends hundreds of students on missions each year with two students accompanied by adult sponsors on each mission. The student team took toys and games to help keep the kids busy while waiting for the surgery. Before students continue their mission, they must register and be selected to attend the Training Mission Training (MTW), which is held twice a year. In MTW students are taught four health modules: dental hygiene, oral rehydration therapy, nutrition, and treatment and prevention of burns. The students create posters for each of these modules and present them on missions, conveying important information to teach the family the simple things that can save lives.
The International Student Leadership Conference (ISLC) is a major aspect of the Operation Smile student program. ISLC 2006 was held at Weber State University in Utah, and ISLC 2005 was held at William & Mary in Virginia. The ISLC 2007 was held at the University of Limerick in Ireland. The ISLC 2008 was held at San Diego State University, 2009 The ISLC was held at Christopher Newport University in Virginia, and the 2010 ISLC was held at the University of Denver.
Awards and achievements
The Magees were awarded the Spirit of the Raoul Wallenberg Award from the Swedish Museum of American History in 1998 for their work in building a network of professionals and volunteers involved in recovering the faces of severely disabled children. In 1999, Kathleen Magee was awarded the World of Children Award for her contribution to helping vulnerable children through her efforts with Operation Smile. Dr. Magee received the 2001 Antonio Feltrinelli Prize ( Premium "Antonio Feltrinelli") awarded by Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei for the Extraordinary Effort of Extraordinary Moral and Humanitarian Value presented theHonorary Kazanjian Lecture to the American Society of Plastic and Surgeon Reconstructive, and in 1998 received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. 1999-2002: Criticisms and responses
Perry Moore's producer, director, producer and writer Perry Moore (The Chronicles of Narnia), Executive Producer, award-winning writer LAMBDA HERO ) was a volunteer student in 1988 and, trained as a health care advisor and scrub, he is part of a team that travels to Manila and then to Dragon City in the Philippines.
Headquarters relocation
Operation Smile announced in late 2007 that it would relocate its headquarters about 16 miles (26 km) from its location in Norfolk, Virginia to a new building in Virginia Beach. The 65,000-square-foot building (6,000 m 2 ) built adjacent to a regional health profession center projected to be built by Tidewater Community College. Headquarters occupies land owned by the city of Virginia Beach and receives funds from the city for site improvements, including landscaping, utility services and sidewalks.
In May 2014, the Operation Smile website listed a new address at 3641 Faculty Boulevard, Virginia Beach as its headquarters.
