Histori

Tarumitra, meaning "Friends of Trees" in Hindi and Sanskrit, is a student movement to protect and promote a healthy environment on Earth. It was the Jesuit Fr. Robert Athickal from St. Xavier, Patna and students from several schools under the leadership of Anindo Banerjee, a grade IX student from Loyola High School, Patna, that the movement appeared in 1988. In April 1989, four high school students from Loyla Secondary School, Anindo Banerjee, Vijay Mathur, Sanjay Pandey and Jayant Chatterjee, started a cycle rally in North India from Patna to New Delhi to raise awareness about the environment and movement. They meet with Indian vice president, Shankar Dayal Sharma, to present their findings. On his return, in Agra, Jayant fell seriously ill and, despite his efforts, could not be saved. His death surprised the movement; However, his sacrifices to the environment make his friends work and promote the movement with great enthusiasm. Today, the sacrifice of Jayant is one of the foundations of the Tarumitra foundation history, which is still remembered in the same way as 30 years ago.

Growth

Strengthened by the spirit of the late Jayant Chatterjee, Tarumitra grew up with the help of Sr. Gita SND, Principal of SMA Hartmann, Fr. George Manimala S.J., Principal of St. Xavier, Patna and Bro. Geo Pulickal, his assistant, who went out of their way to establish a firm firm foothold. Kumar Hemant Sinha, a student of 1990 School of St. Xavier, Patna was elected as his first President. Through their efforts, the movement's headquarters, Tarumitra Ashram, was inaugurated by Collector Patna, Arvind Prasad, on February 20, 1991. In 1994, St. Xavier gave Tarumitra a plot of 10 hectares for a plantation in Digha, Patna.

The strength of Tarumitra also increased rapidly. The girls from the local Hartmann High School, under the leadership of Sr. Gita SND and Sr. Roshni SND, provided the initial incentive needed for the new organization. Units after the Tarumitra unit have appeared in various schools in and around Patna. Many students, social activists and journalists also joined Tarumitra in his crusade against India's environmental destruction.

Campaign

Tarumitra activists have issued massive demonstrations, organized protest demonstrations, refused logging and forests, built roadside gardens, cleaned up landfills, planted rare species of trees, took home-to-home awareness schemes to name but a few. Tarumitra has developed several landfills into a beautiful roadside park called the 'Oxygen Belt'. Each garden is managed by the School or a plant nursery. Tarumitra maintains a total of 38 oxygen belts at one point in time. Working with Swiss Doctor Wolfgong Scheffler, Tarumitra activist M.M Mathew SJ has helped set up a factory to make solar stoves along traditional solar panels to harness the sun's energy. The activists have taken our procession to bannining the use of plastics.

One important step is to prepare Bio-reserves like those in Patna in other parts of the country. Currently similar initiatives are emerging in Gujarat, Meghalaya, Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Kerala. Tarumitra also took part in the International Summit on the environment.
