MAFless Setup is a method to operate a fuel injection system on a gasoline-powered motor vehicle in which the airflow meter, or MAF, is removed.

MAF

MAF is a component in the vehicle intake system through which air flows over a wire heated by an electric current. The airflow cools the wire, allowing the MAF to calculate the air flow mass into the engine. The vehicle engine management computer then uses this information to calculate the exact amount of fuel to be delivered to the cylinder by the fuel injector system.

Delete MAF

When setting up a vehicle equipped with MAF to operate in MAFless mode, MAF will be deleted. This requires the use of an alternative method of calculating the airflow into the engine, which is also referred to as the 'Speed-Density' system, as opposed to the MAF system. In vehicles equipped, this alternative involves the use of absolute manifold pressure, or MAP, sensors. The MAP sensor measures the pressure at the machine's inlet. When coupled with data on per minute machine speed, or RPM, and volumetric efficiency tables over the machine's operating range, the MAP sensor can be used by computer management machines to calculate fuel requirements.

Benefits

By changing the machine from MAF mode to MAFless/MAP mode, the vehicle modifier claims two advantages:

  • MAF can cause small physical restrictions throughout the vehicle intake channel, thus reducing airflow into the engine. By deleting MAF, this restriction is supposedly abolished, possibly improving machine performance.
  • By moving the sensor measuring the airflow from the intake pipe to the point closer to the cylinder, the time lag from air moving through the sensor to reach the cylinder may be reduced, thus possibly increasing the throttle response.

Loss

The potential disadvantage of converting machines from MAF to MAFless mode is that where the MAP sensor is used to measure airflow, the appropriate fuel calculations should be performed by the computer based on the information table programmed by the machine tuner. If other parts of the machine are then modified with effects on the airflow through the engine, this fuel table must be adjusted to fit the revised engine hardware. Since the airflow is measured from the MAP sensor, turbocharger variations will affect the measurement of fuel flow resulting in a higher or lower fuel flow. Without MAF, air flow monitoring is very difficult, so the possibility of reproducibility of desired performance in the field is much less. EGR with feedback and flue sensor systems is needed to reduce the possibility of machine variation to the engine in performance. In contrast, when operating in MAF mode the computer can automatically adjust its fuel delivery based on airflow data generated by MAF, even if other machine hardware is changed.

Another minor disadvantage is like the machine used, the average vacuum decreases. It 'deceives' the MAP sensor into overfuelling. It's just a matter of a very high mileage engine.

MAFless tuning is a popular modification in Australia for Holden vehicles powered by a General Motors LS1 Gen III 5.7 V8 engine. The origins for MAFless tuning of LS1 in Australia are the HSV GTS version of Holden Commodore, which is a factory equipped with a Caway version of Callaway-C4B developed from machines running in MAFless mode. Rated 300 kW, C4B is the most powerful LS1 plant sold in Australia and creates substantial credibility for MAFless tuning of the LS1 V8. Within days of the launch of HSV GTS, CSV Veloce was on the Australian market with 330 kW LS1 incorporating MAFless configuration. The MAFless configuration is then dropped by HSV and the next cars all have MAF's. MAFless tuned LS engine equipped vehicles never happen in the United States as Corvette C5 with the same engine always equipped with MAF sensor. It displays a larger body of MAF sensors than those installed in Australian cars, to avoid the problem of intake restrictions and still provide accurate injection at all times.

North American tuners (as well as Australian manufacturers & tuner Holden & HSV) from LS1 tend to prefer to maintain MAF sensors, instead easier overcoming intake channel restrictions by installing MAFs with larger diameter bodies. In this way, proper fuel injection metering is maintained at all engine speeds and loads. The Australian tuner in comparison, preferring to use the incorrect MAFless tuning method (see the 'Disadvantages' section above), requiring the machine computer to use a predefined refueling table, resulting in an inadequately tuned injection system that can not adjust for other variables or machine hardware. change accurately.
