The tenth series of the English science fiction television program Doctor Who aired on April 15, 2017 and ended on July 1, 2017, and consisted of twelve episodes, after it was announced in July 2015 that BBC Worldwide has invested in a series of programs tenth in its annual review. The series is headed by chief writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, along with executive producer Brian Minchin. This is the third and final series overseen by both as executive producer, as well as the sixth and final Moffat series as head writer. This series is the tenth after following the awakening program in 2005, and is the thirty-sixth overall.
Preceded by a special Christmas in December 2016, "The Return of Doctor Mysterio", this series is the third and final series starring Peter Capaldi as Doctor of the Twelve, the incarnation of the Doctor, Lord of the Time aliens who travel through space and time in TARDIS- her, which appeared to be an English police box outside; Capaldi announced in January 2017 that he would step down from the role after the tenth series. The series introduces Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts, Doctor's latest traveling companion, and also features Matt Lucas as Nardole, which appears on Christmas specials 2015 and 2016. Michelle Gomez and John Simm return as their respective incarnations of Master. The core of the main story for the first half of the series revolves around Doctors and Nardole who occupy themselves as professors and university assistants while they keep an underground vault containing Missy, who has been sworn by the Doctor to protect for a thousand years after the alleged execution. Missy then traveled with the team at TARDIS, and eventually partnered with the previous incarnation as they all fought against the Cyberman attack on board the Mondasian colony.
Steven Moffat wrote four episodes for this series. Other re-writers who have worked on this series and who previously included Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Sarah Dollard, Jamie Mathieson, Peter Harness, Toby Whithouse and Mark Gatiss, as well as two new authors for the revived program era, Mike Bartlett and Rona Munro, the latter writing Survival , the last series of the original classic era. The directors of the series include the three who previously worked on the show, and three new ones. The filming starts on June 20, 2016 and lasts for only nine months, ending on April 7, 2017. This series received positive reviews from critics. The Capaldi and Mackie performances were greeted with praise, as well as the writing, plot, and episode themes.

Casting
Peter Capaldi modeled his role as the Twelfth Doctor in his third and final series; He left after a special Christmas 2017, while Pearl Mackie described Bill Potts' latest companion, after the departure of Jenna Coleman. To avoid leaks while casting a new companion, the production team uses the word "Mean Town", an anagram of "Ten Women"; this is a reference to the fact that Bill is the companion of the tenth series, and expressed by casting director Andy Pryor to the Radio Times. In October 2016, it was announced that Justin Chatwin has been set to appear as a superhero in the 2016 Christmas special "The Return of Doctor Mysterio". He joins Charity Wakefield, Adetomiwa Edun, Aleksandar Jovanovic and Logan Hoffman. On November 16, 2016, the BBC announced the cast for the fifth episode, including Kieran Bew, Peter Caulfield, Mimi Ndiweni and Katie Brayben, with Justin Salinger describing the "Tasker", while Rebecca Benson, Daniel Kerr, Juwon Adedokun, Brian Vernel, Ben Hunter, Aaron Phagura, Sam Adewunmi and Billy Matthews were announced to appear in the tenth episode.

Write and develop
In July 2015, an annual review for BBC Worldwide indicated that they had invested in a series of tenth programs. It was announced in January 2016 that Series 10 will be Steven Moffat's last series as a showrunner, after which he will be replaced in a role by Chris Chibnall in 2018.
In May 2016, Steven Moffat stated in the 500th edition of Doctor Who Magazine that he would write the first and last three episodes of the series. Further, he states that the series is composed largely of a one-part story so that the new companion, Bill Potts, can have more stories to explore his character, although two parts will still be present in the series. Moffat also wrote a special Christmas 2017, after the tenth series concluded.
Lawrence Gough directed the first two episodes of the tenth series, while Frank Cottrell-Boyce wrote the second episode of this series, having previously written "In the Night Forest" for the eighth series. Sarah Dollard, who wrote "Face the Raven" for the ninth series also returned for an episode, just like dramaist Mike Bartlett for an episode in the same production block as Dollard's. Matt Lucas reveals that Jamie Mathieson is set to write the fifth episode for the series, having previously written "Mummy on the Orient Express" and "Flatline" and has co-written "The Girl Who Deded". In June 2016, Mark Gatiss declared he would write episodes for the series; later identified as the ninth episode, a change to Moffat's earlier announcement that he would write for the special episode. The reading for the first production block of the tenth series takes place on June 14, 2016. The shoot begins on June 20, 2016. The second episode was filmed in Valencia, Spain. The shoot for the first block ends on July 28, 2016. The reading for the second block takes place on July 18, 2016, and the filming begins on August 1, 2016, beginning with the third episode. Production on the 2016 Christmas specials begins on September 5, 2016 and wrapped in September 30, 2016. The reading for "Oxygen" takes place on October 12, 2016. The shoot in the fourth block begins on October 17 and ends on November 18, 2016. Promotions
The preview scene was filmed in April 2016 as part of a promotional clip that was featured on April 23, 2016 on BBC One, during the 2015-16 FA Cup semi-finals. It introduces Doctor and his new friend, Bill, confronted with Daleks. However, Moffat has stated that this scene may not be introduced into the series itself. Capaldi, Mackie, Lucas and Moffat promoted the series at New York Comic Con in October 2016.
The first trailer for this series aired on the end of the 2016 Christmas specials, "The Return of Doctor Mysterio". The second teaser footage was released on February 25, 2017. On March 13, 2017, the BBC released new promotional images of Capaldi, Mackie and Lucas, and released the title for the premiere. The full trailer for the series aired on the same day on BBC One, during the 2016-17 FA Cup quarter-finals, along with promotional drawings from the first episode.
Leading the launch of the series, five teaser trailers aired online. On March 31, 2017, BBC America released a trailer for Doctor Who and Class . On the same day, an interview with Mackie was featured on BBC News, which contained clips from the first episode. Another trailer for this series aired on April 3, 2017. Critical reception
Second Series Doctor Who ' has received a positive review. Series 10 holds a 97% score on the online aggregate site review Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 7.37. Writing for Radio Times in the middle of the series trip, Huw Fullerton called it "back to form for the sci-fi series after a much needed rest period, with formats, actors and writers all feeling fresher than when their last outing ". Reactions to individual episodes are also positive, with scores on sites ranging from 85% to 100% to date; six episodes of this series have perfect scores, covering the last four series, after no episodes have achieved this score in the previous series. In particular, episodes like "Oxygen" and "Extremis" received a positive reception, with critics saying that the first was a "great thought episode," while the second episode was labeled as a unique and ambitious episode, and that "Doctor Who did not become more good from this ".
The series also introduced Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts, the Doctor's latest companion; Mackie has received consistently good remarks, noting how he "brings different energies from the previous series companion", describes Bill as "an incredible speed change", and how his acting "is consistently honest, raw at times, and never , had been an imagination ", with certain scenes" guttural "and" heart-wrenching ".
