Histori
The city was created in 1907 when Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad were built through the Amargosa Valley and spurred off their main line built into the Lila C. borax mine in the hills to the west. The city was originally owned by Robert Tubb, who operated a salon, shop, and brothel. The city first appeared on the USGS topographic map of 1910 Furnace Creek Quandrangle.
In 1914, the Death Valley Railroad began operating between Ryan, California, and Death Valley Junction. It carried borax until 1928, when the operation stopped. From 1923 to 1925, the Coastal Pacific Coast Corporation built buildings in the city, hired architect Alexander Hamilton McCulloch to design the Spanish-based Colonial revival whistles at hotels, office buildings and office complexes, now known as the Amargosa Opera House and Hotel.
The city began to decline in the mid-20th century. However, in 1967 dancer and actress Marta Becket happened to visit because there was a car repair. She becomes enamored with the theater, and with the help of a philanthropist, she hires, then buys, hotels and theatrical complex.
The Death Valley post office was opened in 1908 and transferred to Furnace Creek Ranch in 1961. The Amargosa post office opened in 1962, renamed Death Valley Junction in 1968.
In 1980 the city was included in the National Register of Historic Places as the "Valley of the Valley of the Valley's Historic Districts."
When Death Valley Railroad was founded in 1914, it used 3.19 miles (5.13 km) from the tracks belonging to Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad east-southeast of Death Valley Junction to Horton.
