Social analysis

Viewed from appearance

The Huffington Post notes that the show's producers will anticipate the potential of this story arc, deliberately presenting Boyle in a way that will enhance this initial reaction. The Herald describes Boyle's story as a modern parable and a rebuke to a person's tendency to judge others by virtue of their physical appearance. Similarly, Entertainment Weekly says that Boyle's performance is a triumph for talent and art in a culture that is obsessed with physical appeal and presentation. In an interview with The Washington Post , Boyle said:

Modern society is too quick to judge people on their looks.... There's not much you can do about it; that's the way they think; that's how they are. But maybe this could give them a lesson, or set an example.

The Washington Post believes that his initial attitudes and his simple appearance make the judges and audiences "wait for him to grumble like a duck". New York's Daily News says that an underdog mocked or humiliated but then enjoys an unexpected victory is a common allusion in literature, and the contrast between the audience's low expectations and the quality of his singing makes Boyle's television performance very appealing.

Feminist view

R.M. Campbell, music critic for The Gathering Note, compares Boyle to the iconic American jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald, who has a long and respectful career despite being overweight: "[it] is really, very difficult to make career if a woman is not attractive ". In another Huffington Post article, Letty Cottin Pogrebin writes that although people may "cry for years of wasted talent," Boyle's performance is a triumph for "women of a certain age" over youth culture who often lay off middle-aged women. Ask Gold writes in The Guardian that the difference between Boyle's unfriendly acceptance and a more neutral response to Paul Potts in his first audition reflects people's expectations that women are good and talented, without such expectation. for men. Los Angeles vocal coach Eric Vetro stated, "He's a Everywoman as opposed to the untouchable goddess of fantasy, so maybe that's why people react to him."

American Dream

Some media sources commented that Boyle's success seems to have a certain resonance in the United States. An American entertainment correspondent quoted in The Scotsman compares Boyle's story with the American Dream, as representing talent overcoming adversity and poverty. The Associated Press describes this as Boyle's "hardscrabble story," thinking of his modest lifestyle and what they characterize as a city's seizure in his hometown. Similarly, The New York correspondent David Usborne writes that the United States will always respond to a "fairy tale where it seems suddenly selfless to be beautiful, from Shrek to > My Fair Lady ".
