stenomask is a handheld microphone mounted inside the enclosure, soundproof that fits in the speaker's mouth or nose and mouth. Some light versions may be equipped with elastic neck straps to hold them in place while freeing the user's hands for other tasks. The purpose of the stenomask is to allow one to speak without being heard by others, and to keep the background noise from the microphone.

A stenomask is useful for voice recognition applications, as this enables voice transcription in noisy environments. Perhaps more importantly, the stenomask silences the user's voice so as not to interfere with the surrounding environment such as a court or classroom. Users can verbally identify speakers, show unspoken gestures and answers, and explain the activities that occur.

A stenomask operator can be trained to "raise back" everything he hears into the stenomask connected to the voice recognition system, for real-time text transcription of everything being said. This allows "voice writers" to generate instant text feeds in the courtroom and distribute them in plain text format immediately after the process. Tools can also interact with litigation management software.

Trained operators using stenomasks connected to a pre-trained voice recognition system can exceed 180 words per minute while at the same time exceeding 95 percent accuracy. They can also modify the pronunciation of words they say to improve accuracy.

Microphones that work like stenomasks are used by ground crew to communicate with the crew cockpit in an airport environment with extreme engine sound, and are usually part of their headsets.

History

Stenomask was developed by Horace Webb and two colleagues in the early 1940s. He is proficient with Gregg's abbreviation, but seeks a more accurate and faster transcription system, because short notes can become uncontrollable with fast speakers or difficult terminology. Further, to date, the steno journalists will orally dictate the transcription notes into typed form, generating about two hours of dictation for each transcript hour.

Thus, Webb thought he could "repeat it with my voice instead of a pen". After a lot of experiments - first with a cigar box and then tomato juice - he arrived at the solution using a microphone inside an aviator rubber rubber oxygen mask, paired with a coffee pot filled with sound absorber. The result was eventually considered by the United States Navy as the most accurate transcription method among all known "verbatim reporting systems", and then adopted for use in their court report.
