Shell V-Power , formerly known as Shell V-Power Nitro , is the brand name given for Shell-enhanced high specification fuel for motor vehicles. Shell launched fuel in March 2008 under the name Nitrogen-Enriched Shell V-Power, with nitrogen-containing detergents.

Originally used for higher octane Super gasoline/Unrivaled gasoline (formerly known as Optimax in some areas), it is now also used for high specification diesel fuel.

Petrol or gasoline is rated, categorized and sold with an octane rating. Generally, in most regions of the world, the Research Octane Number (RON) is used, but in North America, the Anti-Knock Index (AKI) is used. Unconviable "conventional" standard "gasoline" in Europe, South Asia and Australia has an octane rating of 95 RON, and in North America "Unlimited Premium" is AKI/RdON/PON 91-93 (RON 96-98). However, higher octane "Super Plus without lead" - often formulated with high-quality additives, usually set about 98 RON in mainland Europe; but this may vary by market. Most oil/oil companies are now 'marketing' Super Plus without their own lead under a unique name - and the current name for Super Shell fuel Unprepared is "V-Power". Like most Super Plus unleaded petrol, V-Power also contains higher concentrations of detergents and additives to help clean the engine and launch its operation.

In the UK and Denmark (where Super Plus Unleaded must be at least 97 RON), V-Power has a 99 RON rating (while the V-Power Shell Optimax predecessor is rated 98 RON). There are two other RON 99 fuels available in the UK, the Tesco MOMENTUM99 and the recently Costco Premium Unleaded (99 RON).

In the Netherlands, V-Power is used to have a RON 95 rating, although officials from Shell state that it effectively has a rating of 97 RON. Due to the limited category of 92 RON, 95 RON, 98 RON, and 100 RON, it was officially rated at 95. These days, the RON rating of V-power petrol in the Netherlands is rated at 98. [1]

In Germany, all Shell stations offer V-Power Racing 100, rated 100 RON.

In Greece, all Shell stations offer V-Power at 97 RON. Most Shell stations also offer V-Power Racing (100 RON).

In Australia, from October 2006, Shell and Coles Express re-branded Optimax to V-Power (98 RON). V-Power Racing, an ultra-high performance variant has a 100 RON rating even though Shell has decided to end V-Power Racing from July 21 to mid-August 2008, instead recommending V-Power. The previously obtained V-Power Racing class V that contains 5% ethanol to increase the V-Power octane rating up to 100 RON has now been phased out by Shell due to "changing market".

In the United States (US), around 2004, all US "Premium" Shell gas was renamed "V-Power". In 2015, Shell re-branded V-Power to the newly launched V-Power Nitro.

In Canada, from June 2005, Shell Canada re-branded Optimax Gold to V-Power. In 2015, Shell Canada re-branded V-Power into V-Power Nitro.

In Hong Kong, since there are no refineries located in Hong Kong, Petrol is imported from Singapore, which is 98 RON. However, the V-Power sold at gas stations is rumored to reach 167 RON (the highest original RON for commercial gasoline-class consumers worldwide). Such numbers are not supported by the actual test, nor confirmed by Shell and the contrary from the reading material to Legislator of the Legislative Council.

In New Zealand, from 2007, Shell changed the 95 Premium Without Recipes brand as V-Power. It's still rated at 95 RON. Shell sold New Zealand's retail operations in 2010 to a consortium that later became Z Energy, and after re-branding Shell V-Power was replaced with ZX Premium Unleaded.

In Sweden, Shell V-Power was previously 99 RON, but has now been re-branded under the new owner of St1 from June 2011 to "Shell V-Power E5" resulting in 98 RON with 5% ethanol blend.

In Argentina, from 2009, Shell recruited 95 super fuel as V-Power as well as Diesel premium for V-Power diesel.

In the Philippines, Shell Pilipinas launched a new premium fuel class, Shell V-Power Nitro Gasoline (formerly Shell Super Premium) and Shell V-Power Nitro Racing (formerly Shell V-Power).

In Indonesia, starting April 2013, Shell recruits 95 Super Extra as V-Power with additional extras. While it was still upgraded at 95 RON. In 2016 Shell V-Power in Indonesia will increase from 95 RON to 98 RON and 100 RON.

In Malaysia, RON97 but in Singapore, where Shell offers RON98, octane higher for V-Power Racing.

In the Philippines, on June 8, 2017, V-Power Nitro was replaced with V-Power with Dynaflex technology.

V-Power Diesel

V-Power Diesel is a Shell version of an enhanced diesel fuel, similar to, say to Ultimate Diesel BPs. Like the Ultimate Diesel BP, the Shell V-Power Diesel is designed for modern compression-ignition diesels, to facilitate improved engine performance along with enhanced engine protection, for more consistent operation and engine lifespan.

One feature of the V-Power diesel is much clearer and odorless than regular diesel, mainly because of synthetic GTL components.

Fuel is slightly denser than ordinary diesel so, per volume, energy units are actually lower than ordinary diesels. This is offset, because the fuel tends to be more easily lit (and thus has a higher cetane rating) than regular diesel, and the side benefit of this is that it tends to produce a little soot during combustion.

Shell also markets a different "premium" diesel in Canada labeled V-Power, which they stated "Specially formulated for Canadian weather conditions throughout the year, with cetane, de-icer and corrosion inhibitor refinement." This Canadian V-Power diesel is removed from a special pump that injects a number of NMO 2061 additives that are measured into the diesel supply used in conjunction with other diesel pumps in the workshop. Consequently, it does not contain any outside GTL components that may already exist in a shared diesel supply.

Effective June 1, 2012, Shell Pilipinas launches a new premium diesel fuel class, Shell V-Power Nitro Diesel (formerly Shell V-Power Diesel)

Development in motor sport

Since 2004 Shell V-Power has sponsored the Scuderia Ferrari who participated in Formula One. Shell V-Power also sponsored the Audi Joest Sports Team team until 2009.

Part of the campaign, especially those targeted to sell the brand "V-Power Nitro" from fuel (a higher price than usual and similar to the mix used on the track) is organizing a Formula One event in cities without tracks. For example, on the streets of Warsaw, Poland, where Scuderia Ferrari racer Felipe Massa drives a race car used in the 2013 Formula One Championship.
