Butzweilerhof today

A very small part of the old airfield was used by the Bundeswehr (German army) until December 30, 2007 after which Butzweilerkaserne closed and turned into a mixed retail/residential area. The rest of the land was redeveloped into a movie studio (MMC) between 1998 and 1999. In many movie studios, renovated hangars still hold the Belgian Army inscription placed at Butzweiler. The remaining land has now been divided for rebuilding housing and offices. The main airport building of Butzweilerhof airport, opened in 1926 is protected as a registered building and is undergoing renovations.

Restoration of the current terminal building (2007) has been largely resolved. At the end of December 2007, bulldozers moved to destroy most, if not all, of the remaining RAF site buildings. In December 2008, part of the former Kaserne to the right of the main gate was completely cleared of the former military building. Most of the emptied properties are being rebuilt into malls, consisting of new IKEA stores and some other retailers. The KÃÆ'¶lner Verkehrsbetriebe (KVB) is also in the process of building a new long extension of 1.85 km from the current Ossendorf terminal to the Butzweilerhof/Gewerbegebiet Ossendorf area. 3 new stations (KÃÆ'¶hlstrasse, Butzweiler/IKEA and new terminal, Von-HÃÆ'¼nefeld-Strasse) will be added to the existing Line 5. This extension is scheduled to open in December 2010.
