Peroxide is a compound with an R-O-O-R structure. The O-O group in peroxides is called peroxide group or peroxo group . Unlike the oxide ions, the oxygen atoms in the peroxide ions have a -1 oxidation state.

The most common peroxide is hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), colloquially known as "peroxide." It is marketed as a solution in water at various concentrations. Since hydrogen peroxide is colorless, so is this solution. It is mainly used as an oxidant and whitening agent. Concentrated solutions are potentially dangerous when in contact with organic compounds.

In addition to hydrogen peroxide, several other major classes of peroxides are:

  • Peroxy acid, peroxy derivatives of many known acids, for example peroxymonosulfuric acid and peracetic acid.
  • Metal peroxides, for example, are barium peroxide (BaO 2 ) and sodium peroxide (Na 2 O 2 ).
  • Organic peroxides, compounds with C-O-O-C/H relationships. One example is tert-butylhydroperoxide
  • The main group peroxide, the compound with the E-O-O-E relationship (E = the main group element), one example is potassium peroxydisulfate.
