Oxygen saturation (symbol S O 2 ) is a relative measure of the oxygen concentration dissolved or carried in a given medium as a proportion of the maximum concentration that can be dissolved in the medium. This can be measured with a dissolved oxygen probe such as an oxygen sensor or optode in a liquid medium, usually water. The standard unit of oxygen saturation is percent (%).

Oxygen saturation can be measured regionally and noninvasively. Arterial oxygen saturation (Sa O 2 ) is usually measured using pulse oximetry. Network saturation on a peripheral scale can be measured using NIRS. This technique can be applied to muscles and brain.

In medicine, oxygen saturation refers to oxygenation , or when the oxygen molecule ( O
2
) goes into body tissues. In this case the blood is oxygenated in the lungs, where the oxygen molecules move from the air and into the blood. Oxygen saturation (( O
2
) sats) measures the percentage of hemoglobin binding sites in the oxygenated blood stream. Fish, invertebrates, plants, and aerobic bacteria all require oxygen for respiration.

In an aquatic environment, oxygen saturation is the ratio of dissolved oxygen concentration (O 2 ) in water to the maximum amount of oxygen to be dissolved in water at a temperature and pressure below a stable equilibrium. Aerated water (such as fast moving streams) without oxygen producers or 100% saturated consumers.

The possibility of stagnant water becomes somewhat saturated with oxygen (ie reaches more than 100% saturation) either due to the presence of oxygen producers of photosynthetic water or due to a slow balance after changes in atmospheric conditions. Stagnant water in the presence of rotting matter will usually have much less than 100% oxygen concentration.

Environmental oxygenation can be important for the sustainability of particular ecosystems.
