A breaker bar is a non-ratcheting long blade used with a wrench socket socket. They are used to release very tight fasteners because their additional lengths allow the same amount of power to produce more significant torque than the standard long socket locks. Its use prevents damage to the ratcheting mechanism of the socket wrench. Often, after the first half turn, the binder is loose enough to rotate with a socket wrench.

Function

The long handle on the breaker bar compared to the shorter wrench allows greater torque to be produced with the same amount of force. The breaker blades can be improvised by inserting a wrench into the metal pipe length to increase the available torque. Pipes used for this purpose are called fraud bars or snipes.
